Triathlon training can take over your life. In fact, I think the phrase ‘triathlon widow’ will soon be replacing ‘golf widow’. Triathlon is a way of life and it can be seriously addictive. Most people fall into the sport in their thirties. Gone is the boozing and partying and in comes the married life and mortgage repayments. It is at this stage that many people look for a new challenge in life and triathlon seems to fit the bill for many people. Triathlon training is used by people to lose weight and as a social outlet. Many people enter the sport after finally packing in the field sports they played all their life. People want a new challenge and triathlon seems to be the sport of choice for many.

Whatever the motive, once people do one triathlon they rarely stop at just that.

Triathlon is addictive. Triathlon is a great way of getting out and meeting your friends. When all your friends are part of your triathlon club then training sessions are similar to hanging out with your friends. If you stop training you miss out on the craic with your friends. There is also the scientific side to consider and the feel good hormones generated through training. The sense of achievement you feel after finishing a tough triathlon or setting a new PB is great and the nights out afterwards are even better. Triathlon is a great way to keep in shape and to improve your overall health. Triathlons may be highly addictive but they certainly aren’t cheap. With money getting harder to come by in 2010 can you afford to take up this challenge?

Triathlon is Expensive The fact that there are 3 different sports rolled into one means that the costs involved with taking up a sport like triathlon are multiplied. Cycling alone is one of the most expensive sports you can do. If you have bills to pay and are suffering during this recession then you better be aware of what you are letting yourself in for. To highlight this point, take a look into a triathlon transition area before the start of a race. You will be staring at over a half million euro worth of equipment. That is a lot of money. That doesn’t take into account the cost of entering races, travelling to races, staying overnight at races and food and drink etc. It does not take into account the day to day training expenses that occur either. Without a doubt it is a very expensive sport.

So does the addictiveness and sense of achievement from doing triathlons outweigh the financial implications? Yes, of course it does. It is better than investing your money in alcohol each and every week. If you are not certain then the best way to test the theory is to take part in one yourself next year. I bet you will feel the same way too.
