For the past two centuries surfing has been a well known sport. The earliest information for surfers is from 1767 and they were spotted on the island of Tahiti. Since that beginning the surfing sport hasn’t stopped developing. Surfers use rivers, seas and oceans to catch waves and surf along them. Of course the most preferred places are seas and oceans, because in the rivers you cannot really catch a wave. Rivers are best used for practicing of novice surfers, because they cannot offer a challenge for an experienced surfer. And surfing isn’t only for fun. There are many competitions each year which offer great prizes. Of course in those competitions the conditions are extreme and you may get hurt if not experienced.
Surfing divides in two main classes - longboarding and shortboarding. The main difference between those classes is the design and length of the surfboard as well as the style of riding. However longboarding is more popular than shortboarding. Of course there are times when the oceans and seas are calm and there aren’t any big waves instead there are only flat waves. If this happens many of the surfers decide to skip the day, but others are quite keen and are ready to go to extreme measures to continue to surf. Some may use sidewalks and pave roads to practice their skills or even sneak into backyards to illegally use the swimming pool in someone’s back yard.
Surfing is most popular in the USA and mainly around California, Miami and Hawaii and its fans are mainly teenagers, but there also some older people who still enjoy surfing. Surfing has become a multi-million sport in USA. Each year millions are made from sells of surfing gear and equipment and some people even create a career of surfing by receiving sponsorship from certain companies and enterprises. However to achieve that sponsorship you have to be a very experienced and good surfer.
In surfing there are various techniques, tricks and maneuvers which make the experience even more extreme, but spirit boosting. However there are difficult and easy tricks. And we won’t be exaggerating if we say that the “tube ride” is one of the most difficult, but also most beautiful tricks. When a wave is about to crush it creates a hollow point inside it. The surfer enters that hollow point and gets surrounded by water for a few seconds before the wave crushes. However this is a very dangerous trick and you must be very experienced to be able to choose the right time to enter and leave.
Another difficult, but famous trick is the “hanging ten”. The hanging ten consists of the following actions. The surfer moves up the board till reaching the top. There he puts his two feet, letting their toes off the board. However you must have incredible balance ability and coordination so that you can perform this trick without falling of the board. Although surfing is a very dangerous sport it gathers more and more supporters and fans with each passing year.
