Maybe, very few people remember that around 5 decades ago, surfing did not use to be as popular as it is now. Yes, there was a very small amount of people who used to practice surfing and they were usually considered crazy or weird. However, it was then when surfing suddenly started to increase its popularity and more and more people fell in love with it. So it was that way how surfing reached the popularity, it has got now: by the way, it is considered to be the most popular water sport in the world.
But exactly as everything popular, surfing became commercialized. The reason is that the businesspeople always think of new ways to earn money and when they see, there is a new opportunity, they do not wait too long before they grab it. So, it is not surprising that many investors set up their own companies so that they produce surfboards and other surfing equipment. Some of those investors are the owners of the most famous surfing brands in the world.
Perhaps, most of you know which the most popular surfing brands are. Of course, they are the most expensive ones and a limited amount of people could afford them- only the richest. But there is another question on the schedule- is it worth purchasing such expensive surfing brands. Yes, they are good and you will definitely make a good impression but is that worth spending crazy money?
The experts who have a lot of experience in the field of marketing share that people who are fans of surfing brands pay thrice the price of the actual product. Maybe, you would find it easier when an example is given: let’s say a surfboard costs $500 in any of the luxurious shops of a particular brand. Anyway, it could be found at $150 in any local shop but, of course, the logo of the brand will be missing.
But here comes the question: “Why is it so much more expensive”? Perhaps, most of you would say that the renowned surfing brands manufacture products and equipment of much higher quality. Well, that would be correct to some extent but the truth is that no matter what the quality of surfing equipment is, it could never cost three times more!
In reality, the real reason is called “brand reputation”. Yes, it sounds unbelievable but people spend so much money just because their surfboard will have the logo or name of a famous company. Don’t you think that it sounds stupid?
So, here is a specific example: Fox Head Europe, without any doubts it is one of the most famous and loved surfing brands in the world. A surfboard bearing that name costs around $400! Anyway, you can find pretty much the same surfboard (without the “amazing” logo) at $100. As you can see, that is nearly 4 times less.
However, the truth is that everybody is supposed to make their decision! Nobody can be forbidden to use the most expensive surfing brands as they can afford them. Of course, it is still recommendable people make think carefully before buying any expensive surfboard or surf equipment.
