Maybe you want to be a surfer, but you have no beach nearby. Maybe you want to be a snow boarder, but you have no snowy mountains. Well, can you find a wet spot somewhere? Can you find a decent mud puddle or something? Because the thing for you to try is skimboards.
So what exactly is one? It could not be simpler. It is a dish of plywood at the very simplest, even though they can be fiber-glassed and painted and totally tricked out. What you do is toss it out in front of you on a bit of shallow water, like the edge of a lake, the beach shore line, or even a good sized rain puddle, then run up to it and jump on for a skim across the surface.
And even if you do surf, some days the waves are down. If you snowboard, some times there is no snow. But lakes and ponds and the edges of the river are always good for at least some shallow water, right? So is the edge of the ocean shore. These are the days to slip and slide and glide.
What you are going to want to get stared is a disc of plywood. Try to get some thick enough to not break underway, and big enough to cut about a two-and-a-half foot circle. You want to be able to stand on it with both feet and still have plenty of room to jump on and off of the thing. Then seal with old paint or whatever that will do the trick.
Be sure trick it out with graphics or something so that the wood will not be mistaken for a tabletop or someone takes it to build a cart or a wagon or something odd. This is a skimboard and needs to look righteous. Give it pinstripes or flames or pictures of pretty women. Customize the thing so they know you mean business.
And now comes the fun in the sun. Get out there to the water, where it is only an inch or two deep, and toss the board on it. Take a few steps back, then run to it and jump on at an angle so you shoot out across the wet. Oh yeah, you will fall, but you will get right back up to do it again. This is some serious fun to have right here.
